Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer calls for urgent ceasefire in Israel-Gaza conflict

Sir Keir Starmer has said a ceasefire that lasts must happen now in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The Labour leader made the call in a speech to the Commons today (31 October), in which he also condemned the loss of life on both sides.

Sir Keir said: "I repeat my call for an immediate ceasefire that lasts. This must happen now. We have already seen too much suffering and loss of life on both sides."

The Labour leader also said that the UK government must do more to support a ceasefire and a lasting peace in the region.

He said: "The UK government must do more to support a ceasefire and a lasting peace in the region. This means working with our international partners to press for an end to the violence and a return to the negotiating table.

The conflict has been ongoing for over a week, with hundreds of people killed on both sides.
